How to troubleshoot a black VNC screen on a VPS
Troubleshoot a black or disconnected VPS VNC screen by checking instance power state, console connectivity, boot progress, guest display services and recovery options before reinstalling.
A black VNC screen does not by itself prove that a VPS is offline. Check the instance power state, whether the console session reconnects, boot progress, guest network and display services, then collect the timestamp and error details before choosing a recovery action.
Confirm the virtual-machine state first
Check whether the instance is running, stopped, creating or reporting an abnormal state. A blank display during image deployment or a delayed boot can look different from a powered-off machine.
Reconnect and separate console from guest networking
Open a fresh supported VNC session and note any displayed error. VNC can remain usable even when the guest network or SSH service is not, so test these paths separately.
Use safe recovery evidence
Capture the instance ID, operation time, power state, console symptom and recent changes. This gives support a reproducible starting point and avoids confusing a display problem with an IP or DNS issue.
Back up before destructive recovery
If the operating system must be reinstalled, confirm the selected instance and image first. Reinstalling can erase the system disk and is not a substitute for a backup plan.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Can SSH fail while VNC still works?
Yes. The guest network, firewall, SSH service or DNS can fail independently of the console path. Use VNC to inspect the operating system and test the network separately.
Does a black VNC screen mean the VM must be deleted?
No. Check power state, boot progress and console behavior first. Deleting an instance is destructive and should only follow verified backups and the appropriate recovery decision.
What should a support ticket include?
Include the instance ID, region, approximate time, screenshot or console error, current status and the latest relevant operation such as reboot, password reset or reinstall.
